Brave or Stupid

Description

When you read about someone sailing around the world, it's usually a dotcom millionaire or a professional adventurer. Brave or Stupid? tells a very different story. It's an everyman tale about a middle-aged, seasick electrician with no money who suddenly and for no reason decides to sail around the world. It's the story of Yanne Larsson, a man with a dream born not out of a passion for sailing or a search for identity or the need for a challenge. This is the story of a simple handshake. One of the old-fashion iron-clad ones.

A casual suggestion over wine with best friend Carl Andersson, turns into one of those ideas that just won't go away. Twenty-four hours later, a handshake decides it. The little details – buying a boat, learning to sail and saving up money – take five years, but in 2002, the two men leave Helsingborg, Sweden on a three-year voyage that will change them forever. Storms, tropical diseases, drama, love and comedy - their story is an adventure like no other. Brave or Stupid? is a book for anyone who has ever gone beyond what is sensible and realistic to discover a whole new world outside and a whole new person inside. This is a book for anyone who still believes in the power of dreams. And handshakes...

About the Author

Author Name : Tracey Christiansen Yanne Larsson Carl Andersson

Yanne Larsson – adventurer/sidekick Was born and raised in Helsingborg, Sweden, across the water from Elsinore and Hamlet's Castle. Yet, he rarely made the 20 minute ferry crossing due to seasickness. Yanne is a strong believer in the power of dreams and his perseverance has taken him on a rollercoaster ride from electrician to businessman to world sailor and back. In 2002, he left Helsingborg to sail around the world with his best friend Calle Andersson, who, like him, originally had no sailing experience. He is on his third marriage and his third career, and he isn't even a rock star. Calle Andersson – sidekick/adventurer Born in Eslöv, Sweden, Calle started as an electrician, but his talent for mathematics soon took him to higher studies in electrical engineering. He eventually worked his way up to Managing Director of Peab's electrical division. Since then he has had a long career of management positions at major energy companies. Calle is well-liked wherever he goes, especially in northern Australia and Scotland where his karaoke version of My Way has become part of the local folklore. On the three-year voyage around the world, he showed a natural ability for stowing large quantities of wine. Even though he did his military serviced as an elite commando he did the dishes onboard for three years without complaining. (Yanne did the cooking.) For better or worse, Calle is known for being 100% honest and 150% stubborn. Tracey Christiansen – writer and interpreter for adventurers and sidekicks After travelling the globe for 25 years, British born Tracey Christiansen settled in Sweden with a Danish husband. Having unpacked the boxes from her numerous sojourns and hung the curtains, she decided to concentrate on writing full-time. To date, she's translated and published numerous articles and short stories for a variety of publications and was just putting the finishing touches to her first novel when Yanne and Carl asked her to write their story in English. After being plied with copious glasses of wine, it seems she agreed. When not being a run-off-her-feet mother, chauffeur of two girls, caretaker to one cat and mostly uncomplaining wife, she enjoys reading, napping on the sofa and embarrassing her teenage daughters by dancing in public.

Latest Poem

He rode an old McClellan that had seen better days

But he sat up there like a king who controlled all he surveyed

His mount a buckskin mare as pretty as you’ve seen

With legs meant for working and eyes bright and clean

Behind him trailed a mule, a fine example of the breed

A pack piled high with goods but no halter or a lead

I asked him where he’s headed and where he might have been

The reason for his travel and what he might have seen

“I’ve seen the greatest country that God ever made

Sometimes mountain vistas, sometimes a grassy plain.

I’ve seen family members who make me feel ashamed

And many fellow workers who lie their way to fame

I’ve seen herds of caribou clicking cross the plain

Massive Mountain Grizzlies, great horses wild and tame.

I’ve seen massive progress ended by greedy fools

Or by those who need control and impose silly rules

And others stopping growth by thinking with their heart

When simple logic tells ‘em the horse is behind the cart.

We all get our little chance but others need a turn

The younger need some room to grow to build to learn

When I’ve done my time, my life here is thru

I don’t want my final vision to be only gloom and fools.

I’ll be free of all that as will the mule and mare

We’ve trod the greatest land, together scenery shared

It all makes my former life shallow and pale

And now where I travel nothing is ever stale

I’ve had my days of wealth measured in dollars and cents

With days, weeks and years surrounded by wall and fence

But now I have much more, a far greater treasure

Surrounded by natures wonders, beauty that can’t be measured

Any measure of success may not be right for all

The test that has some rise up will make others fall

I hope the path I travel and the message that I preach

Will be heard and understood by people that I meet

No one has the right to say that my view is wrong

Nor do I have the right to condemn another’s song

But enjoy the journey and help your fellow man

Have a laugh and learn, and make a proper stand

For something you believe, give it a proper fight

And if you should lose and you know you might

Within your heart you’ll know you did your very best

And did what you thought right when put to the test.
