Interview with Spencer Fraseur

Hi Spencer Fraseur, thank you for agreeing to this interview.
Oltobooks : Tell us a little about yourself and your background?
Spencer Fraseur : My name is Spencer Fraseur and I am originally from Tampa Bay, Florida. I graduated from Florida State University with a degree in Sports Management and an MBA. My work has been featured in many outlets throughout the years and his first book, the international bestseller, The Irrational Mind is available in every format and has sold copies in over twelve countries worldwide. The book also won the Royal Dragonfly Book Award for “best psychology book of 2020.” He has spoken at the annual Academy of Management, The Southwest Academy of Management, The European Group of Organizational Sciences conference in Amsterdam, and the Strategic Management Society in London. Spencer currently lives in Dallas Texas with his wife Brittany as he teaches capstone courses in strategy and international business and attends the University of Texas at Arlington as a Business Strategy doctoral candidate.
Oltobooks : What are your ambitions for your writing career?
Spencer Fraseur : I just love writing. My work is research but writing a book about a specific topic in non-fiction is like a vacation for me away from the rigors of academia. I don't have any ambitions for my writing career except trying to give as much value and great content to people who are interested
Oltobooks : When did you decide to become a writer?
Spencer Fraseur : I've always wanted to become a writer. It's why I picked my current career in academia and why I decided to write my first book "The Irrational Mind" during my MBA. Once you get into a topic that's interesting...you're hooked!
Oltobooks : Why do you write?
Spencer Fraseur : As I said above I love writing. Writing about something that interests me is like a vacation. Writing about decision making and cognitive biases (the irrational mind) or writing about failure and the positive role it can play in your life (my newest book, Failing Upwards) are interesting topics for me. It is a joy to sit down and write something you genuinely believe in and are excited to learn about/ talk about.
Oltobooks : What made you decide to sit down and actually start something?
Spencer Fraseur : I've been writing since I was very young but when it came to my first book, It was actually a marketing class at my MBA program. The professor did a presentation on decision making, consumer habits, and the ways in which humans make biased nonsensical decisions. I was fascinated by it and it prompted a deep dive into psychology literature surrounding topics centered around human decision-making and its flaws. That eventually led to a book that layed out everything I learned.
Oltobooks : Where do your ideas come from?
Spencer Fraseur : I have a million ideas. Most of them come from being involved in higher academia. Sometimes my ideas are simply book titles, other times they are content. It has to be a mixture of both for me to consider following through on the idea.
Oltobooks : What is the hardest thing about writing?
Spencer Fraseur : The last couple chapters. I call it the "finish line." When you start out on a book you have a lot of energy and, at least for me, I tend to try to write as much as possible during this period because I know eventually I will fall out of love with the idea of writing it. Once that happens, if I'm not a good portion of the way through writing the book, I might not come back to it.
Oltobooks : What is the easiest thing about writing?
Spencer Fraseur : Write about things you love! For my newest book, I really wanted to tackle the negative perception we tend to have about failure and try to analyze it using research and data to show how failure (when viewed correctly) can be positive. It came from my personal battles with failure and the perception I had adopted versus people I knew in my life who actively ran from it. When you write about something that is meaningful to you and something you are passionate about, its easier to get going on it.
Oltobooks : If this book is part of a series, tell us a little about it?
Spencer Fraseur : Both of my books "The Irrational Mind" and my upcoming book "Failing Upwards" are both not part of a series. I've never had an idea that spanned multiple books and I like to keep my content relatively short and concise.
Oltobooks : What are your thoughts on writing a book series?
Spencer Fraseur : I don't mind the idea but I see it as more of a fiction thing than a non fiction process. My personal opinion is that I like change. I'm not big on reading a fifteen-book series. I prefer characters to move faster and to absorb more per chapter than what those series can offer.
Oltobooks : What is your favourite positive saying?
Spencer Fraseur : I've been quoted from the first book quite a lot but my opening pitch is still one of my favorite quotes, "Having an understanding of the human mind and how it functions is probably the single most important thing anyone who wants to be successful can do."
Oltobooks : Where can you see yourself in 5 years’ time?
Spencer Fraseur : Hopefully tenured professor of strategy. I don't necessarily have strong goals when it comes to writing books but you never know... maybe another one (yikes)?
Oltobooks : What advice would you give to your younger self?
Spencer Fraseur : Something I talk about A LOT in my newest book "Failing Upwards." DARE TO TRY. I've watched so many people I love and care about decide not to try something because it could be embarrassing or risky. I would tell my younger self to not be afraid to put myself out there and try always, regardless of if I fail. Failing to try is a far worse failure in my opinion

In my Room long ago
I sat so merry in my abode
Loving hands around me
I dreamt of such glorious days
One day i would see

I remember the day I left
My room
I closed the door behind me
One quick look again
Then walked away
The room which would always remind me

The glorious days I had dreamt
I did merrily spent
How little did I then know
Life turns on a dime
My room is now not as it was
When I closed the door
Behind me

My room now is a prison
But not how one would invision
It is one of sorrow and grief
Sadness burns into the bare walls
I catch my breath
And weep

Why did thou'st doth betray?
The room which once embraced me
I ask with riddled heart
Jagged and torn
Which wicked riddles have I thus sought?

I sit still
I am now my room
No dreams as once before
I age before my open door

In my room long ago
I sat merrily in my loving abode
Loving hands did hold me
All gone

My room and myself
Now one
Two thrust to be together
Forever
Alone
